Best Time to Visit Okinawa Depends on Your Plans
Okinawa is mild year-round, but “you can always swim in winter” is misleading. JMA climate normals for 1991–2020 show an annual mean of 23.3°C in Naha, with monthly means of 17.3°C in January and 29.1°C in July. Winter northerly winds can make it feel cooler. Information checked August 14, 2026.
Choose by Activity
| Goal | Useful period | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Beach swimming | Generally April–October | Opening dates, lifeguards, sea conditions |
| Diving/snorkeling | Guided trips may run year-round | Winter exposure protection and operator approval |
| Cooler sightseeing | November–March | Bring layers for wind and evenings |
| Beach weather with fewer crowds | April or October–November | Fine weather is never guaranteed |
Rainy Season and Typhoons
The official Okinawa guide says the rainy season is typically from mid-May to late June, while typhoons may affect travel from June through September. Disruption is possible outside those windows too. Check JMA, airlines, ferries, and tour operators before departure and again on the day.
Can You Swim in Winter?
Some guided diving and snorkeling operate year-round, but not every beach is open for swimming. Water temperature, wind, waves, and personal tolerance matter. Enter only designated areas during permitted hours, and avoid unsupervised beaches.
Sea Safety Checklist
- Check beach opening status, lifeguards, flags, and warnings
- Leave the water during strong wind, high waves, or lightning
- Use sun protection, hydrate, and wear marine shoes
- Do not touch unfamiliar marine life
- Never swim after drinking alcohol

Summary
For casual swimming, choose an officially open beach from spring through autumn. Winter is excellent for sightseeing and selected guided marine activities. Your best season depends on activities, budget, crowds, and weather risk.
