Naoshima is a small Seto Inland Sea island with an unusually dense collection of contemporary art, architecture and village projects. The essential planning rule is to reserve the museums first, then fit ferries, buses and meals around those timed entries.
Choose your arrival port
Ferries reach Miyanoura from Takamatsu or Uno, while some services use Honmura. Check the exact port and final return sailing. Ferry tickets do not reserve museum admission.
Chichu Art Museum
Tadao Ando designed the museum largely underground, using natural light for works by Claude Monet, James Turrell and Walter De Maria. Date-and-time admission is required. The official site warns that sold-out slots may have no same-day sales, so book before finalizing transport.
Benesse area
Benesse House Museum, Lee Ufan Museum and nearby outdoor works occupy the island’s south side. Bicycles cannot enter parts of this area; use local buses and the designated shuttle where required.
Honmura and the Art House Project
Converted village houses hold site-specific works. Some locations use timed tickets or separate admission. Residents still live beside the route, so keep voices low, stay out of private property and park bicycles only where permitted.
One-day planning
- Reserve one priority museum.
- Choose the ferry that arrives with a generous buffer.
- Add either the Benesse area or Honmura—not every site.
- Write down the final two return ferries.
Food, luggage and weather
Restaurants are limited and may close between lunch and dinner. Store large luggage before sightseeing, carry water and prepare for sun, rain and hills. Strong weather can disrupt ferries.
Photography
Outdoor works and museums have different rules. Follow each sign; indoor photography, video and commercial use may be prohibited. Do not climb or touch artworks.
FAQ
Can I buy Chichu tickets on arrival?
Only if a slot remains; advance online booking is strongly recommended.
Can I see Naoshima and Teshima in one day?
It is possible on limited schedules but usually rushed. One main island per day is safer.
Should I rent a bicycle?
It can help, especially an electric-assist model, but buses are needed in restricted areas.
