Bonsai Workshops in Japan: Booking, Safety and Souvenir Rules

A bonsai workshop can introduce living Japanese craft, but the finished tree is not automatically an easy souvenir. Plant-import rules, aftercare and shipping can be more complicated than the class. This guide helps you choose responsibly and decide whether to take home a pot, tools or only the skills.

Choose the right workshop

  • Observation: demonstration with no plant to take home.
  • Beginner styling: wiring, pruning and design under supervision.
  • Repotting: seasonal horticultural work.
  • Long-term course: best for residents who can revisit the tree.

Questions before booking

  1. Which species and seasonal task?
  2. How much hands-on work?
  3. Are tools, wire, pot and soil included?
  4. Are chairs and language support available?
  5. What happens to the tree after class?
  6. What is the cancellation policy?

What happens in class

The instructor may identify the tree’s front and trunk line, then demonstrate selective pruning and wiring. Do not remove a branch only because it looks untidy; each cut changes future growth. Stop if wire begins to mark bark.

Tool safety

Cutters, shears and wire ends are sharp. Keep tools on the table, point blades away from others and wear eye protection when recommended. Do not handle display trees or tools outside your assigned station.

Can you take bonsai overseas?

Often, no. Live plants, soil, moss and untreated wood may require phytosanitary documents or be prohibited. Airline acceptance does not equal customs permission. Check the destination plant-protection authority before booking, and never conceal a plant in luggage.

Better souvenir options

  • A clean locally made pot.
  • Approved tools packed under airline security rules.
  • A certificate or permitted photo.
  • Knowledge applied to a legally purchased plant at home.

Aftercare

Request written guidance for light, watering, temperature, wire checks and repotting. “Water once a day” is not universal; need changes with species, pot, weather and substrate.

Etiquette

Arrive on time, photograph people only with permission and do not pressure the instructor to make a tree look finished in one session. Bonsai develops over years.

FAQ

Do I need gardening experience?

No, if the class is labeled for beginners.

Can children join?

Policies vary because sharp tools and wire are involved.

Is it year-round?

Demonstrations may be, but horticultural tasks are seasonal.
