The history of Dotonbori begins in 1612 in the early Edo period, when a man named Nariyasu Doton invested his personal funds to dig a canal. Later, playhouses and red-light districts were built on both banks of the river, and it developed into one of the oldest entertainment districts in Japan, dating back to the Edo period. Soemoncho is famous as an entertainment district following the Edo period red light district “Osaka Shinmachi”, and is still the nightlife district that represents Osaka Minami. Precautions
It is very crowded on weekends and holidays, and it can be difficult to walk. Be careful of pickpockets and pickpockets. There are some places along the river in Dotonbori that don’t have fences, so be careful not to fall if you’re drunk. 📍 Kyoto Gion
Origin/History
Gion is Japan’s leading red-light district with a history of over 800 years. It flourished as a temple town for Gion Shrine (Yasaka Shrine) from the end of the Heian period, and was established as a red-light district lined with teahouses in the Edo period. Hanamikoji is Gion’s main street, with its stone-paved streets lined with teahouses and restaurants that convey the traditional beauty of Kyoto. The culture of maiko and geiko is a traditional performing art that Kyoto is proud of.

The scenery lined with cobblestone alleys, wooden teahouses, and historic restaurants is the exact image of a “Japanese night.” If you’re lucky, you might even meet a maiko or geisha wearing a kimono. In recent years, maiko experiences and ozashiki play experiences for tourists have become popular. The scenery along Hanamikoji and Shirakawa Minami Dori is especially beautiful from dusk to night.

Precautions
Trespassing on private property and photographing maikos without permission have become a problem in areas such as Hanamikoji in Gion. Unauthorized photography in private locations is prohibited. Additionally, many teahouses and restaurants operate on a membership or referral basis, so tourists should basically enjoy the outside. For casual eating and drinking, try the shops along Shijo-dori. It is most beautiful in the evening and at night, so it is recommended to visit at dusk.
📍 Kobe Sannomiya (Sannomiya)
Origin/History
With the opening of Kobe Port in 1868, Kobe Sannomiya developed as a former settlement where foreigners lived. As a result, it has developed a unique culture that is strongly influenced by the West and is different from other Japanese entertainment districts. The name Sannomiya comes from the three shrines of Ikuta Shrine that once existed in this area. Today, you can still enjoy the exotic townscape and the cosmopolitan nightlife.
