Tokyo Winter Illuminations 2026–27: Dates, Routes and Best Displays

Tokyo’s winter illuminations do not all run through the same dates. Some Christmas displays end on December 25, while boulevard lights in Marunouchi, Hibiya, and Yaesu continue into February. Choosing by travel date—and grouping nearby displays—prevents a long cross-city trip to an event that has already finished.

Marunouchi: the easiest first illumination

Marunouchi Naka-dori runs between the Tokyo Station and Yurakucho areas, making it easy to combine with Tokyo Station, the Imperial Palace outer gardens, dining, or shopping. The 2026 illumination continues through February 14, 2027, while the separate holiday program runs November 12–December 25. If you visit after Christmas, confirm which installations remain rather than relying on Christmas photographs.

Practical route: start at Tokyo Station Marunouchi side, walk south along Naka-dori, then continue to Hibiya. The route is mostly level, but leave space for commuters and do not place tripods across the pedestrian flow.

Hibiya: the best choice after Christmas

HIBIYA Magic Time Illumination 2026 runs from November 12, 2026 to February 28, 2027, although individual areas have different periods. The Hibiya Step Square Christmas centerpiece ends on December 25, while Hibiya Naka-dori, the Eternal Heart Tree above the grand staircase, and the sixth-floor Park View Winter Garden continue through February 28, 2027. Those latter areas are scheduled to light up from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Check the venue for temporary access restrictions. This distinction matters for January and February travelers.

The official lighting hours are 4:00 pm–11:00 pm. Earlier in the evening is better for blue-hour photographs; later can be calmer after dinner.

Tokyo Midtown Roppongi: a Christmas-specific stop

MIDTOWN CHRISTMAS 2026 is scheduled for November 26–December 25. The concept is “Midwinter Night’s Dream,” with garden illumination, a real fir tree, and a new lounge area. This is a Christmas event, so do not add it to a post-December-25 itinerary without checking for separate winter facilities.

Roppongi can be crowded on Fridays, weekends, and near Christmas Eve. Arrive shortly after lighting starts, or eat first and visit later. Follow one-way pedestrian controls when posted.

Yaesu: a compact Tokyo Station option

MIDTOWN YAESU CHRISTMAS 2026 runs November 19–December 25, with the YAESU WINTER LIGHTS portion continuing to February 14, 2027. The official hours are 4:00 pm–11:00 pm. It is useful on an arrival or departure day because it sits beside Tokyo Station and does not require a separate evening across the city.

Yomiuriland: choose this for a full evening

Yomiuriland’s 2026–27 Jewellumination season begins October 29, 2026. Unlike central Tokyo’s free streets, it is a ticketed amusement-park experience with rides, extensive light displays, and fountain shows. Operating days, closing times, ride availability, and show schedules vary, so use the official calendar rather than treating it as a quick city-center stop.

From central Tokyo, allow time for the train and the final connection from Keio-yomiuriland Station. Buy the ticket type that matches whether you want rides or only an evening visit.

Two efficient evening plans

Plan A: Tokyo Station to Hibiya

  1. Arrive at Tokyo Station before sunset.
  2. See Midtown Yaesu if its current-season display is operating.
  3. Cross to the Marunouchi side and walk Naka-dori.
  4. Finish in Hibiya for dinner and the later-running displays.

Plan B: Roppongi Christmas evening

  1. Visit a museum or viewpoint before dusk.
  2. See Tokyo Midtown shortly after lighting starts.
  3. Have dinner in Roppongi rather than crossing Tokyo again.

Photography and crowd etiquette

  • Do not stop suddenly in the center of a busy walkway.
  • Keep tripods, light stands, and large bags out of commuter routes.
  • Do not photograph identifiable people at close range without permission.
  • Turn down screen brightness and avoid flash near performances.
  • Obey barriers, staff instructions, and no-entry garden areas.

What to wear

Tokyo is milder than northern Japan but standing outdoors after dark feels colder than walking during the day. Bring a wind-resistant outer layer, gloves, and comfortable shoes. For rain, use compact waterproof gear that does not block other visitors in narrow viewing areas.

Summary

Use Tokyo Station, Marunouchi, and Hibiya for an efficient free evening; choose Roppongi for a Christmas-specific visit and Yomiuriland for a full amusement-park night. Always distinguish the Christmas end date from the longer winter-light period.
