Chugoku Running Guide 2026: Okayama, Tottori, Matsue and Yamaguchi

Full marathons in western Japan’s Chugoku region range from an Okayama city race and a point-to-point start near the Tottori Sand Dunes to Matsue’s lake country, the Kanmon Strait at Shimonoseki and the performance-oriented Hofu Yomiuri. Scenery and regional food do not tell you whether you qualify, where to collect a bib or how much time you actually have. This guide separates open, closed and completed events using official information checked on 26 August 2026.

Matsue and Hofu take place on the same day. An active application link is not proof of an ordinary place: check category, residency or qualifying-time rules, capacity and successful payment.

Choose by cutoff and transport before scenery

• Large city and previous-day check-in: Okayama, with 15,000 full-marathon places and identity verification the day before.
• Point-to-point from the dunes: Tottori, where start and finish differ and official buses shape the morning.
• Castle and lake country: Matsue, a six-hour race with first-come entry and winter weather.
• Strait, bridge and late-race work: Shimonoseki, with eleven cutoffs and a demanding second half.
• Qualifying time and four hours: Hofu, not a casual first-marathon tourism slot.

“Sunny Okayama,” sunsets, pufferfish and crab are cultural associations, not weather forecasts or guaranteed runner benefits.

Okayama 2026: build the trip around Saturday check-in

The full starts at 08:45 on 8 November, has 15,000 places, a six-hour gun-time limit and a ¥14,000 fee. It included local-priority, general, 250 overseas and hometown-tax places, but ordinary applications have ended. The old ¥13,000 figure is no longer current.

The certified course connects the city, Asahi River area and open landscapes; it is not an admission tour inside Okayama Castle or Korakuen. Schedule sightseeing separately. Official guidelines

Tottori 2026: understand the point-to-point dune start

This edition finished on 15 March. It started at 09:00, had 4,000 domestic places plus a separate overseas category and a six-hour limit. Fees were ¥13,000 domestic and ¥20,000 overseas plus charges—not the old ¥10,000. The official 2026 outline did not promise crab at aid stations. Wait for new rules before planning the next edition.

This is a certified road marathon starting near the dunes, not a 42 km run across protected sand. Visitors should not remove sand and should follow conservation paths. Official outline

Matsue Castle 2026: the current realistic entry option

The full is scheduled for 08:30 on 6 December, with 4,900 general places, 100 hometown-tax places, a ¥13,500 fee and a six-hour gun-time limit. General and overseas entry is scheduled from 1 June through 23:59 on 30 September, subject to earlier first-come closure. The certified route links Matsue Castle, Shinjiko Bridge, Matsue Station and the Nakaumi-side Yatsuka area; it does not promise a Lake Shinji sunset throughout the run.

Shimonoseki Kaikyo 2026: save strength for the second half

The race starts at 08:30 on 1 November, has 10,000 places, costs ¥12,000 (¥13,000 charity) and allows six hours from the gun. Ordinary capacity filled on 1 July. It starts and finishes outside Kaikyo Messe Shimonoseki, reaches Chofu, crosses the Hikoshima Bridge sector and uses the northern bypass, with eleven cutoffs.

Pufferfish cuisine is an important Shimonoseki experience, not a universal entry benefit. Check licensed restaurants, price, reservation and allergies separately. Official outline

Hofu Yomiuri 2026: qualifying performance is the doorway

The 3,500-runner event starts at 10:40 on 6 December, costs ¥13,000 and closes after four hours. General entry for 3,000 runners went to a lottery and is closed; results were notified on 17 August. General applicants must be 19 or older and show, from a certified event since 1 December 2022, a marathon within 4:00:00 or half within 1:33:00.

Hofu has a deep competitive history and broadcast presence. An elite application window does not mean an ordinary overseas visitor can bypass general eligibility. Official application rules

For overseas entry, names and bib logistics matter

1. Confirm an overseas category, first-come or lottery method, residency, age and qualifying performance on the official page.
2. Use the passport-matching Roman-letter name, date of birth, reachable email and phone. Arrange language help before using a Japanese-only portal.
3. Save currency, service fee, card authentication and refund terms. Flights and lodging are separate contracts.
4. Check overseas mailing, previous-day or same-day desk, ID, proxy rules and any signed pledge.
5. Never transfer a bib or substitute-run unless an official transfer mechanism explicitly permits it.

Matsue may be the present option, but a RUNNET account, remaining inventory and completed payment are still required. Do not rely on spaces lasting until deadline night.

Join transport, lodging, cutoff and safety in one plan

• Arrive early: protect the previous-day Okayama desk, Tottori’s early buses and winter disruption margin for Matsue and Hofu.
• Point-to-point: design Tottori baggage, reunion and return transport from the finish backward.
• Gun time: subtract back-block delay, toilets, aid, bridges and crowding from every cutoff margin.
• Weather: prepare tested layers for Sea of Japan wind/rain and Setouchi cold or sun; do not debut equipment on race day.
• Medical: chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, altered consciousness or major unsteadiness overrides finishing. Japan’s emergency number is 119.

Wheelchair, guide-runner and assistive-device rules differ by race. Ask the organiser before entry and keep pedestrian and tactile routes clear.

Treat the region as lived culture, not a backdrop

Okayama’s castle town, dune conservation in Tottori, Matsue’s tea and water culture, Shimonoseki’s strait exchange and Hofu’s racing history connect the event to local life. Do not enter private property, publish intrusive close-ups without consent, leave waste outside designated points or ignore marshals and medical staff.
