Kansai Marathon Guide 2026–2027: Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Nara

Kansai’s city marathons are not interchangeable “runs past famous sights.” Osaka combines more than 30,000 runners with charity charges, Kyoto separates a domestic lottery from a first-come overseas category, Kobe is a point-to-point harbour race, and Nara’s hills and eight cutoffs decide the day. This guide translates tourism claims into live entry, total cost, packet pickup, transport and gun-time reality.

Join autumn 2026 and spring 2027 in one entry table

These are entry fees, not trip totals. Osaka adds a mandatory minimum charity contribution and service charge; Kyoto, Kobe and Nara also add applicable handling costs.

Choose the operating model, not only the city name

• Scale, charity and lottery: Osaka; separate EXPO, start and finish stations.
• Cultural landscape, hills and point-to-point: Kyoto; overseas first-come entry is for non-Japan residents.
• Harbour, two waves and point-to-point: Kobe; in-person pickup before race day is compulsory.
• Hills, eight cutoffs and Saturday-only pickup: Nara; it is not a run with deer.
• First-come alternatives: Lake Biwa and Fukuchiyama; waiting for a big-city lottery result may be too late.

World Heritage sites and castles supply cultural context, but temple admission and sightseeing experiences are not automatically included.

Osaka 2027: ¥16,000 is not the checkout total

The full starts at 09:15 on 28 February outside Osaka Prefectural Government and finishes in Osaka Castle Park. The individual/group general allocation totals 28,420 and racing ends after seven hours. Entry runs from 28 July to 17:00 on 28 August, with a lottery if oversubscribed and results planned for 28 September.

The old ¥14,000 claim and one-line Dotonbori/Osaka Castle pitch concealed the real decision. Recheck the official course and cutoffs, and keep nightlife from damaging sleep and fueling. Osaka City official entry notice

Kyoto 2027: do not mix the domestic lottery with overseas entry

The full starts at 09:00 on 21 February at Nishikyogoku Sports Park and finishes outside Heian Jingu, with 16,000 places and six hours from the gun. The 12,240 domestic-general allocation is already oversubscribed and closes on 31 August. The 3,000 overseas allocation is first-come through 30 September and requires residence outside Japan at application.

The optional neck gaiter’s sarasa-inspired design links to cosmopolitan Kan’ei-period motifs, but it is a separate paid item—not entry or a guaranteed cultural experience. Official application guide

Kobe 2026: out toward Akashi, back to the harbour

On 15 November, waves start at 09:00 and 09:15 outside Kobe City Hall, turn near Okura Coast in Akashi and finish in Kobe Harborland. Capacity is 20,000, the limit is seven hours from the first gun and the fee is ¥18,000 plus handling. Entry has closed.

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge can be a distant view; the marathon does not necessarily cross it. Include sea wind, city return and second-wave loss in cutoff margins. Official application guide

Nara 2026: plan for hills and eight cutoffs, not deer selfies

The full starts and finishes at Rohto Konoike Park on 13 December at 09:00, turns in Tenri, has 11,750 places, six hours and eight cutoffs. Domestic fees vary from ¥13,500 to ¥15,000 with prize selection; overseas residents pay ¥18,000 plus handling. First-come entry from 5 June to 14 July is closed.

Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha and Nara Park form a living religious and heritage landscape. Race passage and worship are separate activities; follow local rules on prayer, photography and deer distance. Official event outline

Lake Biwa, Fukuchiyama and races awaiting new rules

• Lake Biwa 2027: 08:20 on 14 March, Ojiyama Stadium to Karasuma Peninsula, 8,000, six hours, ¥15,000 plus 6%; first-come 3 August‑30 October. Bib mailed, no event-eve/day pickup.
• Fukuchiyama 2026: 22 November on a certified Yura River-area route. Standard full ¥11,000 and overseas Run Japan ¥18,000 differ by category; scheduled through 20 September, first-come.
• KIX Senshu: the February 2026 race is over. Do not preserve “flat near Kansai Airport” as a current permanent promise before new rules.
• Himeji Castle: the February 2026 edition is over. Never reuse its old fee or pickup window as next-edition information.

“Lakeside” does not mean every metre is flat, and Fukuchiyama still requires finish-area and late-course planning. Open entry only from the official site.

For overseas entry, confirm residence category and total first

1. Confirm the year, domestic/overseas residence condition, lottery/first-come method, age and predicted/qualifying time.
2. Use a passport-matching name, reachable email/phone and correct date of birth.
3. Add entry fee, administration, compulsory donation, optional goods and payment currency line by line.
4. Calendar result notice, payment deadline, pickup pass, identity check, previous-day desk and no-proxy rule.
5. Flights and hotels are separate contracts; inspect change terms and insurance for rejection, cancellation or disruption.

Put three venues, cutoffs and winter health on one timeline

• Pickup/start/finish: Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe use different stations for all three; avoid relying on scarce station lockers.
• Previous day: protect Nara’s Saturday-only desk and city-race EXPOs against flight or Shinkansen delay.
• Gun time: subtract back-block loss, toilets, aid, hills, bridges and crowding from each cutoff.
• Winter: use tested layers for start-area cold, sea wind, rain and sun; never discard clothing on the street.
• Medical: chest pain, severe breathlessness, altered consciousness or unsteadiness overrides finishing. Japan’s emergency number is 119.

Wheelchair, guide-runner, guide-dog and assistive-device rules differ by event and discipline. Keep accessible and tactile routes clear.

The route is a lived city, not a theme park

Osaka’s merchant-city charity, Kyoto’s environmental practice and craft motifs, Kobe’s port and disaster-recovery connections, and Nara’s worship landscape and wildlife are deeper than photo appeal. These races borrow residents’ roads: stay off private property, avoid intrusive close-ups and place cups and waste only where instructed.
