Naoshima, Teshima and Inujima combine contemporary art with small-island life in the Seto Inland Sea. The limiting factor is not the number of museums—it is ferry frequency, closed days and travel between ports. Plan one main island per day unless current connections clearly support more.
Naoshima: the best first island
Naoshima has the broadest concentration of museums and outdoor works. Ferries arrive at Miyanoura or Honmura from Takamatsu and Uno. Major museums can use timed admission, and bicycles are restricted in parts of the Benesse area, so check the official route before renting.
Teshima: landscape and one major experience
Teshima Art Museum sits within a terraced-rice-field landscape. The island is hilly; an electric-assist bicycle can help, but buses and rentals are limited. Build the day around the museum reservation and the final ferry.
Inujima: industrial heritage and art houses
Inujima Seirensho Art Museum reuses a former copper-refinery site, while the Art House Project is woven into the village. Ferry service is limited, food choices are few and residents’ homes sit beside visitor routes.
Ferry-first planning
- Choose the island and departure port.
- Confirm museum closed days and timed tickets.
- Write down the last two return ferries.
- Add time to walk between the museum and port.
- Prepare a weather cancellation alternative.
Island etiquette
Do not enter private yards, block lanes or photograph residents without permission. Take rubbish with you, keep noise low and park bicycles only in designated places.
What to bring
Carry water, sun or rain protection, a small power bank and some cash. Luggage should be stored on the mainland or at your accommodation where possible.
FAQ
Can I see all three islands in one day?
Usually not well. Ferry gaps and museum time make one island per day more reliable.
Is the Setouchi Triennale the only time to visit?
No. Permanent museums and artworks operate outside festival periods, but schedules still vary.
