Japan’s streetcars are more than nostalgic vehicles: they are everyday transport woven into neighbourhood streets. Riding one lets you watch shopping arcades, temples and ordinary homes pass at street level. The only trap for first-time visitors is assuming every city uses the same boarding system. It does not.
A five-step streetcar routine
- Confirm direction: route number and destination matter; some cars terminate before the end of the line.
- Prepare payment: a nationwide transport IC card is often accepted, but not universally. Keep coins or a ¥1,000 note as backup.
- Board correctly: door rules differ by operator. Watch signs and local passengers rather than guessing.
- Request your stop: press the stop button promptly after the announcement.
- Exit safely: wait for the tram to stop, mind the gap and cross the roadway only at the designated crossing.

This contrast is why a universal instruction such as “always enter at the rear” is unsafe. Tokyo’s official guide says front boarding and rear exit. Hiroshima’s official guide says passengers may board through all doors and pay at the exit.
Two low-stress routes for a first ride
Tokyo: Minowabashi to Oji-ekimae
Access: Minowabashi is near Minowa Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line; Oji-ekimae connects with JR Oji Station and Tokyo Metro Oji Station. Price: ¥170 cash or ¥168 IC per ride; the Toden one-day pass is ¥400 for adults. Operating days: daily transport service; use the official timetable for disruptions and first/last cars. Recommended plan: allow 45–60 minutes including a walk around the old shopping streets near Minowabashi. The full line runs between Minowabashi and Waseda, with 30 stops over 12.2 km.
Hiroshima: Hiroshima Station to Atomic Bomb Dome-mae
Access: board at the streetcar platforms connected to Hiroshima Station; leave at Atomic Bomb Dome-mae for the Peace Memorial Park. Price: ¥240 adult flat fare. Operating days: daily transport service; check live notices and timetables. Recommended plan: verify the line number before boarding, then sit on either side—the value is seeing the city change from station district to civic centre. Allow extra time at rush hour.
Safety, photography and comfort
- Hold a strap: trams share roads with cars and may brake suddenly.
- Keep luggage out of the aisle and give priority seating to those who need it.
- Set phones to silent and do not make calls in the car.
- Photograph only from a safe public area. Never step onto tracks or lean into the roadway for a picture.
- Ask staff before boarding with a large stroller or wheelchair when the car is crowded; low-floor vehicles and stop accessibility vary.

Do I need a reservation?
No. These are ordinary local services. Board at a stop and pay according to the displayed instructions.
Is a rail pass valid?
Usually not. JR passes do not automatically cover municipal or private streetcars. Operator day passes may be better for repeated rides.
What if I miss my stop?
Remain calm, get off at the next stop and check the opposite platform. A new fare may be required.
